The Sweet Far Thing concludes the trilogy started by A Great and Terrible Beauty, following the adventures of Gemma Doyle, the last inheritor of a power beyond imagining. Rebel Angels left off with Gemma binding all of the magic to herself and in the beginning of The Sweet Far Thing, Gemma is afraid that she has lost the is unable to enter the realms until she, Felicity and Ann find a secret entrance in the burned East Wing.

The Sweet Far Thing ends the trilogy that began with A Great and Terrible Beauty, followed by Rebel Doyle and her friends are boarding school girls in Victorian England. They should be focusing on their upcoming debuts, but instead their attentions are captured by a war brewing in the realms, the magical world that Gemma can open.   Just like the last book, The Sweet Far Thing is an incredible mystery. I spent most of the beginning of the book with my mind racing wondering what this clue or that clue would lead to. When the final mystery was revealed I wasn’t entirely shocked because I suspected it all along but the clues weren’t as obvious as the previous book.

The Sweet Far Thing is a long read, but it is incredibly well written and moves at a surprisingly fast clip.

(Watch for some lovely metaphors tucked here and there in Bray's prose.) As for the ending, I would normally object, but I think this story is clearly focused on Gemma's efforts to make good choices and know, truly know, who she is Cited by: 5.
